چکیده
This paper highlights the link between deforestation and credit instability in Latin American countries which exhibit strong deforestation rates as well as macroeconomic instability that is often rooted in the alternating episodes of credit booms and crunches. Pieces of explanation establishing a causal link between credit instability and deforestation driven by agricultural expansion are put forward. A key ingredient of the model is the existence of two sectors: a labour intensive agricultural sector and a capitalintensive one, the former relying only on land and labour and the latter using three production factors: capital, labour and land. Land is a specific factor within each sector. Land increases are deemed to be mainly an irreversible deforestation process; land decreases barely coincide with forest cover increases. Deforestation occurs in response to changes in the opportunity cost of capital, primarily because of the irreversible character of forest conversion. Econometric tests are performed on the 1948-2005 period and on a sample of Latin American countries. Controlling for the effects of macroeconomic policies and usual deforestation determinants, a positive and significant impact of credit instability on deforestation is found. Robustness checks including different specifications do not contradict this result. Sound macroeconomic policies have also significant positive environmental effects.

Income Convergence toward USA: New Evidences for Latin and South American Countries
Abstract In this paper we test two versions of convergence hypothesis namely deterministic or conditional convergence and stochastic or catching up hypothesis using Carrion-i-Silvestre et al. (2005) stationary test. The results show Latin and South American countries (LSA) catching up process toward the USA failed in 1980s and somewhat in 1990s. But in 2000s most of them could lie in converge...
متن کاملCreditor Rights, Enforcement and the Access to Credit
A large and growing literature has demonstrated in recent years how deep and efficient financial markets help to foster economic growth, by promoting investment and productivity growth (e.g., Rajan and Zingales, 1998). Through their role in selecting and monitoring projects, diversifying risks, and allowing investment and production to be carried out in the most productive scale and time frame,...
متن کاملCredit Constraints, Technology Choice and Exports: A Firm Level Study for Latin American Countries
In this paper constraints on technology choice and credit access are introduced into the Melitz (2003) model in a dynamic setting in order to explain the factors that limit the benefits to a firm from trade liberalization. Theoretical analysis shows that firms face credit constraints depending on their initial productivity and the cost of the credit. As a result, credit constrained firms may ne...
متن کاملLong Live Democracy: The Determinants of Political Instability in Latin America
In this paper, we investigate the determinants of political instability in Latin America. In a panel of 18 Latin American countries from 1971 to 2000, we find that democratic countries experience less average instability in the region, indicating that the move to increased democracy in the last couple decades may alleviate the persistent problem of instability in the area. We also find that inc...
